Raising a child in India is not, in its own nature, a horrible idea. However, for many Indian middle-class families, the decision has become too expensive and stressful because earnings are not increasing as quickly as school, healthcare, housing, and lifestyle costs.

How much it can cost?

Raising a child in India can cost between around ₹38 lakh and ₹50 lakh or even more in an urban middle-class family, with higher costs in cities or with private schooling and college. Some estimates show that by age 21, the amount may exceed ₹1 crore in high-end urban settings.

The largest portions typically come from:

  • Early years include delivery, vaccines, baby care, and childcare.

  • School years include school fees, tuition, books, transportation, and gadgets.

  • College costs include tuition, lodging, food, transportation, and living expenditures.

Why do the middle class feel the pressure?

The fundamental issue is a budget mismatch. Middle-class families sometimes have limited savings, mortgage payments, medical bills, and retirement plans, so one child might absorb a significant portion of monthly income. If the family wants a decent school, coaching, and a private college, the expenditures quickly escalate.

Another cause is unpredictability in future spending. Child costs are not fixed because inflation drives up school fees, rent, healthcare, and college costs over time. As a result, what is manageable today may become a burden 10-15 years later.

Why do people think having a child is a bad idea these days?

People generally don't mean that children are evil. They mean that the timing is difficult. Many middle-class couples believe they have to pick between:

  • Children's expenses and retirement savings

  • Child costs and home loan EMI

  • Child costs and lifestyle stability.

  • Childcare bills and peace of mind.

For many, the anxiety is straightforward: "Can I give the child a good life without compromising my own financial future?" That is why some couples postpone having children, have only one child, or wait till their finances improve.

Bottom line

So, the honest answer is that having a child is not a horrible idea, but having a child without proper financial planning can be a significant burden for the middle class. The difficulty isn't love or intention; it's affordability, inflation, and planning for the future.
